About education

Overview

The mission of the W. M. Keck Observatory is to advance the frontiers of astronomy and share our discoveries with the world. We feel that one of the best ways to give back to our local community is to help schools and other youth groups learn about the Universe and how mankind has studied it.

A committed team of our employees specializes in leading group activities for kids to teach them about astronomy and science. We invite teachers and adult leaders of scouting and similar organizations to contact us and arrange a visit. We offer several options which are suitable for different groups. All activities are free of charge; however, due to demand we may not be able to grant every request. We give preference to teachers whose students are studying astronomy, planetary science and physics in their classes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMIT TOURS
Due to the heath hazards of high altitude, as well as other safety, operational and liability concerns, we are unable to accomodate summit tours of students less than 16 years of age. We also cannot accomodate tour groups of any kind that exceed a total of 15 individuals. Additionally, all tours must be requested at least one month in advance in order to guarantee that adequate staff are available to handle any health-related emergencies that might arise.

If you have any questions or concerns about student summit tours, please contact the Keck Observatory Communications Officer by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or telephone: (808) 881-3827.
