Welcome to our very first edition of Cosmic Matters, a creative and collaborative multimedia publication to bring awareness to the achievements and strategic goals of the W. M. Keck Observatory. It is very exciting to be part of an organization with such great vision and bold dreams. In such a short time, Keck Observatory has literally changed our perception of the Universe and provided a profound view of our own place in it. We look forward to sharing our journey with you.

Our "Evenings with Astronomers" lecture series has been an unqualified success, bringing the excitement of research at the cutting edge to many Hawai'i residents. Here is a sample of participant feedback:
"The presentation was so inspiring that we wish we could turn back the clock and go back to college as students once more and experience the wonders of astronomy and the modern sciences!
"My wife has as much interest in science as Yogi Bear. Yet she was inspired and now knows why stars twinkle."

One of our primary objectives for the next year is to develop a successful events and communications program which reflects the exemplary achievements of the Keck Observatory. Cosmic Matters is one facet of this outreach effort.

The inspiration for the name of our e-magazine came during a recent trip to the East Coast. While in Harvard Square visiting sights and browsing through books at the Coop, it materialized: Cosmic Matters. Click here to see some of the other e-magazine names suggested by Keck staff.

Please take a few minutes to indulge yourself in these articles about astronomy, about Keck Observatory's involvement with our Island community, and about the progress we are making toward understanding through science, technology and new eyes the big questions that continue to spark human curiosity.
