2022 Waimea Solar System Walk

January 1, 1970 @ 12:00 am

Take a Trip Through the Solar System!
Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, W. M. Keck Observatory, and the Maunakea Observatories are bringing back a hybrid Waimea Solar System Walk for 2022. The walk launches on October 29th with an in-person event along Ala ʻŌhiʻa Road in Waimea from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and combines our favorite aspects of the in-person and self-guided walks. Booths with hands-on activities will be set up along the sidewalk highlighting planets and other celestial objects in our cosmic neighborhood. Participants will find decals marking the location of each planet in our solar system. Each decal contains an image of the object and a QR code. The code leads to a video created by Maunakea Observatory staff members describing the object in English and ʻŌlelo Hawai’i. The first 200 people to complete the walk on October 29th will receive prize packs from our tent at the Waimea District Park along with Halloween goodies.

Also, come dressed in your favorite Halloween attire! A Solar System Walk Costume Contest with prizes will be held at 1 p.m. at the Waimea District Park.

Following the opening day, decals will remain in place for the remainder of the year for self-guided tours.
