Keck Observatory is recognized as one of the most prolific and sought-after tools in astronomy. Made possible by a grant of $138 million from the W. M. Keck Foundation, the Keck I telescope began science observations in 1993; observations with Keck II began in 1996. Today, as a private non-profit research and education organization, Keck Observatory is supported by both public funding sources and private philanthropy.
