Kamuela (Waimea), Hawaii – To ensure the safety of our ohana as Hurricane Lane makes its closest approach to Hawaii Island, Keck Observatory will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, August 23. Observing is also cancelled tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow night (Thursday).

Our Emergency Management Team will continue to closely monitor weather conditions. On Thursday, after the peak threat from this Category 4 hurricane passes Hawaii island, we will carefully assess whether to reopen on Friday.

Our thoughts go out to everyone in Hawaii. Lane is one of the most powerful hurricanes to make a close encounter with our islands in more than two decades; please stay safe.

Mahalo,

Hilton Lewis, Director
