Director’s Message: Hurricane Lane Update

CREDIT: NOAA

Kamuela (Waimea), Hawaii – We are now seeing the impacts of Hurricane Lane across Hawaii Island, with multiple road closures due to heavy rain, flooding, and landslides. As such, Keck Observatory will remain closed tomorrow, Friday, August 24. Observing is also cancelled tomorrow night (Friday).

Our Keck Observatory ohana remains safe, and inspections today showed our facilities are sound.

Though Hurricane Lane has weakened to a Category 3 cyclone, the forecast shows the threat of flash flooding and tropical storm force winds will continue through tomorrow on Hawaii Island.

Our Emergency Management Team remains vigilant in tracking the severe weather, keeping safety top of mind for all.

Mahalo,
Hilton Lewis, Director
W. M. Keck Observatory
